Mr. David L. Day,  Past Chair
Director, Environmental Management
City of Calgary

Mr. David Day brings over 30 years experience in the parks and conservation field to his position with The City of Calgary’s Environmental Management business unit. Born in England and raised in Montréal, Mr. Day is a practicing geographer by education and inclination (B.A., 1969, Concordia; M.Sc., 1971, University of Calgary).

Mr. Day’s professional career includes 20 years public service with Parks Canada, specializing first in natural resource inventory and management, and subsequently as superintendent of Jasper National Park, Rideau Canal and Banff National Park. From 1992 until 2003, he was a principal in the firm IRIS Environmental Systems Inc., specializing in environmental assessment and management for the tourism industry in protected and environmentally sensitive areas. He has also worked internationally for the Nature Conservancy, World Bank and industry.

In June 2003, Mr. Day returned to public service, attracted by the challenge of applying his experience to supporting Calgary’s municipal and community leaders to achieve a high standard of environmental quality for the present and future generations.

 

Mr. Ronald Kruhlak

Mr. Ron Kruhlak has appeared before all courts in Alberta and energy and environmental administrative tribunals in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He has acted for industry, municipalities, public interest groups and government regulators on a variety of hearings and litigation involving environmental assessments, contaminated sites, energy projects and licensing issues.

Mr. Kruhlak is recognized in the Canadian Legal L’Expert Directory as “leading practitioner” in environmental law and one of the leading 500 lawyers in Canada, as well as the International Who’s Who of Environment Lawyers.

He is past president of the Environmental Law Centre and frequent speaker on environmental, energy and regulatory issues. He is a member of the Canadian Centre for Environmental Arbitration and Mediation.

Mr. Kruhlak was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1984 and the Northwest Territories Bar in 2004.

 

Guy West, Chair
President
Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation

Guy West is President of the Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation, the not-for-profit common collection agent for non-beer beverage containers in Alberta. As such he works closely with key stakeholders (provincial governments, industry and NGOs) in planning and implementing strategy with respect to beverage container stewardship in the province. He has been involved in recycling in Alberta for more than 18 years. He is a past president and long-time active member of the Recycling Council of Alberta, and has served on numerous other groups involved in waste management and recycling.

Guy West has a passion for youth and a deep desire to bring about generational change in both behaviour and values in Alberta’s young people. Since assuming the Presidency of ABCRC in 2003, Mr. West has dramatically expanded the organization’s youth programming – developing unique tools such as a Cycle of Life Teacher’s Handbook and a recognition program for Alberta schools that provides recognition and rewards for enhanced recycling behaviour.

In 2000, ABCRC received an Emerald Award for its consumer awareness efforts in beverage container stewardship.

Mr. West earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Athabasca University in 2000.

 

Mr. Al Maurer
City Manager
City of Edmonton

Mr. Al Maurer is leading the City of Edmonton administration through a time of unprecedented growth. As Edmonton’s economy booms and the population rapidly grows, the City continues its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Under Mr. Maurer’s leadership, all civic departments are working toward ISO 14001 certification in which a third-party auditor will ensure the entire organization meets the most rigorous environmental standards.

The city manager is the only member of the administration that reports directly to City Council, and is responsible for all City operations including emergency services, public transit, facilities, transportation and the extensive parks systems that makes Edmonton unique among Canadian cities.

 

Dr. Bill Calder
Director of Environmental Relations
Alberta Environment

Dr. Bill Calder provides leadership to Alberta Environment’s relations with outside parties – stakeholders, Aboriginal people and governments, other provinces, the federal government and internationally.

After gaining a doctorate in Canadian History, Dr. Calder began his government career as a senior intergovernmental officer with Alberta Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs. Following 8 years in that department, he joined the Saskatchewan Indian and Métis Affairs Secretariat as deputy secretary for a 7-year term representing Saskatchewan on Aboriginal constitutional issues and negotiating land claims. Dr. Calder joined the Environment Council of Alberta in 1993 and Alberta Environment in 1995.

Dr. Calder’s accomplishments during his government career include in recent years a Gold Premier’s Award of Excellence won by the Alberta Environment Emission Trading Team under his leadership.

Mr. Paul Hunt
Director, Sustainable Development & Stakeholder Relations
Enbridge

As the Director of Sustainable Development and Stakeholder Relations at Enbridge Inc. Paul works closely with the company’s Departments and Business Units with respect to Public and Government Affairs, Environment, Health & Safety and Business Development to provide strategic direction and leadership on Corporate Social Responsibility issues. His activities include the engagement of the three orders of government, environmental NGOs and other key stakeholders.

Before joining Enbridge, Paul was Vice President of Climate Change Central, where he planned and implemented strategy with respect to climate change
risk mitigation in Alberta. Prior to this, he was Director of
Environmental Affairs and Sustainable Development at Epcor.

Paul participates in a number of organizations addressing sustainability issues and is on the Board of the Alberta Emerald Foundation, an organization that he chaired from 2003 to 2007. He is a former member of the National Advisory Committee that advised Federal and Provincial Ministers of the Environment on environmental matters relating to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Mr. Hunt earned his BSc. in Zoology (Honours) from MacDonald College of McGill University in 1975 and a MSc. from McGill University in Ecology and Environmental Sciences in 1978.

 

Mr. Ken Kan
Manager, Environment Health & Safety
General Electric Canada

Mr. Kenneth Kan brings a diverse background of industry experience balanced with technical and business training. He acquired his B.Sc (1992) and M.Sc (1994) at the University of British Columbia and his Executive Master of Business Administration (2007) at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Born in Taiwan and raised in Vacouver, he has a passion for not-for-profit work and the environment.

Mr. Kan began his career with a 6-year period in the natural gas production, transmission and distribution industry. He broadened his exposure to multiple industries during this tenure with the BC government. For the last 7-years, he has focused on manufacturing and energy-related industries.

At GE, Mr. Kan is responsible for environment, health and safety at power transmission and distribution manufacturing sites globally. In driving a culture of sustainability, he brings leadership that embraces and leverages the cultural, operational, and regulatory diversity at sites encompassing almost 8,000 associates. He also has GE-wide leadership responsibilities for the Western Canadian region.

He holds professional designations from the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and has been published in a peer-reviewed international periodical.

Mr. Darrell Martindale

Albian Sands Energy Inc.

For the past 5 years Mr. Darrell Martindale has worked for Albian Sands Energy's (Albian) Muskeg River Mine and is currently the Manager of Environment and Regulatory Compliance. Under his direction, Albian became the first oilsands mine to become ISO14001 certified and registered.

After graduating in 1978 from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. in Mineral Engineering, Darrell has spent much of his professional life working in the mining sector. He has worked in many diverse settings such as Bolivia, Indonesia and British Columbia.

Darrell also spent almost 5 years working in international development and following a two year CUSO contract in Bolivia, Darrell returned to Alberta and in 1986 to complete his M.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering specializing in Irrigation and Drainage. He returned to Latin America and worked on development projects in Bolivia, Honduras and Nicaragua.

For the last 3 years Stacey has been the Principal of her own environmental consulting company helping companies manage resources and regulatory compliance issues. She has been a trainer for the Dale Carnegie Course for 8 years. She enjoyes the great outdoors and loves looking at her xeriscaped front yard in Calgary. She has a Masters of Science in Bioresource, Food Engineering from the University of Alberta. She's been involved with the Nominations and Selections committee for over 6 years and is always inspired by the passions of others taking care of planet earth.
