Project Milk Container Recylcing Program
Description High-density polyethylene (HDPE) milk jugs are among the largest contributors of plastic waste in Alberta landfills today. To remedy this situation, the Alberta Dairy Council and Alberta Environment established the Plastic Milk Jug Recycling Program in July 1999. This program has been very successful in raising public awareness of the need to recycle milk containers. Their motto, "Capless - Clean & Crushed" has resulted in 2,491 tonnes of milk jugs being diverted from our landfills in the first two years of the program's operation. In May 2000, a pilot project was introduced to selected grade-four students in order to help them become more aware of the need to recycle. The pilot proved so successful that the program was soon launched to all grade four students in Alberta. In January 2002, the program expanded once again to include paper-based gable-top milk cartons. With this addition, the program was renamed the "Milk Container Recycling Program".
