Nominee Clare & Kathy Tannas
Project Protecting the Alberta Rangelands
Description Clare and Kathy Tannas have been working in the rangelands of Alberta for over 25 years. In this time they have contributed greatly to the understanding of the biological diversity of this province through their company, Eastern Slopes Rangeland Seeds Ltd. (ESRS), having inventoried in excess of a million acres of rangeland, discovered hundreds of rare plants and created management plans respectively. ESRS developed a native seed business, producing tens of thousands of pounds of seed and an extensive breeding program. Recently Kathy wrote three books titled "Common Plants of the Western Rangelands" and contributed to several other publications. These books have become highly utilized field guides used by both universities and professionals. Their strong environmental commitment continues: last year they invited 70 people to the annual plant identification courses at their home and they are also teaching additional courses for other organizations as part of their work.
