| Project | Water Centre |
| Summary Of Activity | The Water Centre was strategically designed and constructed to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. It is positioned to achieve a LEED platinum level certification by using less energy and water and was constructed of primarily materials with recycled content. The site was remediated from pre-existing brownfield condition to meet the most stringent reclamation guidelines in Canada. The Water Centre was designed to create a minimal impact on the environment and achieved: • 91% construction waste diverted from the landfill; • 72% reduction in wastewater; • 59% reduction in water use; and • 52% savings in annual energy consumption. The Water Centre features: • green roof; • rainwater collection & reuse; • naturally daylight building; • low energy HVAC & electrical systems; • exemplary construction waste diversion; and • daylighting and occupancy sensors. This building plans to offer water and wastewater education programs to enhance community awareness. |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success | By adopting the Sustainable Building Policy in 2003, The City of Calgary was the first municipality in Canada to ensure any new City-owned buildings achieve a minimum silver standard under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). During the planning stage for the Water Centre, however, there were no LEED buildings in Calgary to study and learn best practices. In order to meet the required standards and achieve excellence, the project team had to educate themselves on sustainability and LEED. Through the integrated design process they learned to integrate those principles into the Water Centre, achieving a building positioned for LEED-Platinum certification. |
