Nominee Alberta Native Plant Council
Project Promoting and Conserving Native Plants in Alberta
Summary Of Activity The Alberta Native Plant Council (ANPC) promotes knowledge of Alberta's native plants and works to conserve native plants and their habitats.  ANPC is committed towards conservation and biodiversity, as shown through their acts of volunteer stewardship for four natural areas and their participation on federal, provincial and non-governmental organizational committees to conserve native species and ecosystems.
ANPC has engaged itself in the community by writing books like The Rare Vascular Plants of Alberta, initiating the Adopt-a-Plant Alberta plan and organising the Botany Alberta.  In addition to this, ANPC has contributed towards the mitigation of damages to and restoration of ecosystems through:  developing collection, salvage and management guidelines; developing a policy on herbicide use; and producing a list of Native Seed Sources.
Barriers/Challenges To Success ANPC's success has relied on the inspiration and dedication of volunteers. Continued involvement by volunteers, old and new, relies on enabling experiences that are meaningful and enjoyable. ANPC provides opportunities for individuals with an interest in advancing their knowledge of native plants to learn from each other. Specific projects are defined based on the needs and interests of members and if resources are needed, joint efforts are made to secure them. There is no strategic plan, but rather an organic evolution of activities and projects within a framework of well-defined goals. Members lead by example.
