| Project | Advanced Bioremediation Technology for Upstream Oil and Gas Sites |
| Summary Of Activity | The oil and gas industry in Alberta has drilled thousands of wells over the past century, resulting in the need for remediation of soil and groundwater prior to reclamation activities. The predominant method for contaminated soil remediation is transportation of contaminated soil, landfill disposal and backfill; three million tonnes of contaminated soil are landfilled annually in Alberta. These practices limit encouragement of "green" technology development or application coupled with increased and long-term contaminant management. Biogenie has been focusing on contaminated site assessment and remediation since 1986. The company typically employs biological treatment using patented ex situ or in situ Biopile processes for impacted soils. |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success | The successful implementation of biological remediation of soil requires the overcoming of a variety of obstacles. Most notably, Biogenie's technology is only applicable to biologically degradable contaminates. The treatment takes a longer timeframe than traditional methods to meet remediation objectives for a site, and additional space may be required to accommodate material handling and containment pad construction. Furthermore, ex situ Biopole performs between temperatures of 15 and 30 degrees Celsius; it is a challenge to keep a biotreatment system active during winter months. |
