| Project | Sustainable Development Project |
| Summary Of Activity | The objective of Cochrane High School’s (CHS) project is to increase awareness and knowledge of alternative forms of energy sources and to reduce human impact on the environment. The outcome of project has two aspects. First, the school has done large scale promotion of the project to generate constant, positive interest in this technology through the use of guided tours and a website. Second, the school was worked towards reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and other natural resources. The sustainable development project has been an ongoing project since 2004 and has received numerous acknowledgments for its role in reducing human impact on the environment and supporting sustainability. |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success | The biggest challenge was raising the $25 000 for the project. CHS' initial efforts yielded small to no gains, which was frustrating and deflating to the students. The momentum needed to keep a project of this calibre going had to be maintained, which required creative solutions. If one fundraising effort was unsuccessful, CHS came up with more ideas as necessary; fundraising did not stop until the goal was reached. This took a full year to achieve, which is long by student standards. Another key ingredient to the success of a project such as this is that someone needs to be the committee leader for the long haul. Ms Bennett spearheaded the initial phases of this project and motivated the students not to give up due to her past experiences. The proven success from phases 1 and 2 helped those students involved to know that if they stick with it, they too will experience success. |
