Nominee Goodfish Lake Development L.P.
Project ISO 14001: 2004 Implementation
Summary Of Activity Goodfish Lake Development L.P. is an Aboriginal company owned by the Whitefish Lake Bank #128 near Lac La Biche, Alberta.  The company specializes in cleaning industrial safety garments and institutional laundry.  It has successfully implemented an encompassing environmental management program within the ISO 14001:2004 framework.
Barriers/Challenges To Success The single largest barrier to success of the ISO 14001:2004 program was the lack of education and information readily available to the company. Since Goodfish Lake Development L.P. is the first aboriginal business, dry cleaning business and laundry business in Canada to implement this program, this presented a large challenge: how would the company learn to implement the program?  Senior management recuited the help of a third party to design the program within Goodfish Lake Development L.P.'s scope of operations, but it was found that initial application of the system was inappropriate for company use.  At this time, training was sought and given to the EMS Committee to restructure the ISO 14001 program to work within the company's goals and capabilities.  The reworked program is now a functional system that both suits the company's needs and places the environment first.  By working through the program in several trials, Goodfish Lake Development was able to implement an extremely rewarding program and overcome its challenges of being a pioneer.
