Status Recipient
Year 2009
Nominee Jill and Basil Seaton
Project A Lifetime of Environmental Commitment and Advocacy
Summary Of Activity Jill and Basil Seaton have shown unrelenting energy in environmental stewardship—even now at their combined age of 167.  The Seatons are still working together on issues concerning Jasper National Park like habitat protection, biodiversity and preserving species-at-risk with a wide variety of groups like the Sierra Club, Bow Valley Naturists and the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.
The Seatons can be described as professional volunteers; they have seen many environmental initiatives over the decades through to success.  As Rachel Plotkin of the Suzuki Foundation said, “It is this combination of factors that make their work to maintain ecological integrity so effective.  They choose strategic interventions, work with others to build broad support and use science to follow up and educate the public  as to their progress."
Barriers/Challenges To Success The Seatons live in a town within a National Park, where there are regulations and structures in place to enforce protection and necessary environmental policing.  Jill and Basil Seaton provided outside input to the work being done by the regulators, which was not always welcome.  Their persistent energies, dedicated research and thorough understandings of all perspectives allowed them to challenge, influence and change policy.
As Bruce Leeson, who spent 34 years with Parks Canada as an environmental scientist, notes:  "Very noteworthy—(the Seatons) would not misrepresent a situation.  They researched their subjects well and never represented a situation they could not demonstrate or confirm: a unique ethic in the practise of environmental advocacy."
These days, another challenge for Jill and Basil Seaton is their age.  Basil turns 90 this year, while Jill is a spritely 77.  Even with their advancing years, they still have the energy to engage environmental challenges as they come and act as ideal environmental stewards.
