Project Lafarge Meadows Enhanced Gravel Site Reclamation
Summary Of Activity The Lafarge Meadows project is an enhanced reclamation of a former gravel pit. After contributing for more than thirty years to building communities in Calgary, Lafarge transformed the site into a 147 acre extension of Fish Creek Provincial Park, creating a natural legacy for generations to come. Lafarge Meadows now includes a large constructed wetland forming vital wildlife corridors and protecting essential riparian areas, all within the boundaries of a major urban center. The project has increased community access to natural spaces while ensuring they are protected for the future.
Environmental utility was also considered in the design of Lafarge Meadows. The creation of the wetland adds up to two million cubic meters of storm water management capacity for communities in south Calgary, while contributing to increased water quality entering the Bow River. Lafarge Meadows is an example of environmental leadership and industry excellence.
Barriers/Challenges To Success Lafarge faced a number of challenges in the implementation of the Lafarge Meadows project. Land reclamation usually involves traditional end uses such as farmland, residential, or commercial development. Voluntarily undertaking reclamation to an enhanced natural state (i.e. constructed wetland) was a challenge. A shift of mindset was required to undertake this innovative project. Creating buy-in from all stakeholders required extensive communication and understanding of the benefits. For example, once the full scope and benefits of the project were understood, Lafarge demonstrated wholehearted commitment through employee involvement and extensive financial support. The success of the project is attributed to unwavering commitment and dedication of those involved.

The number and diversity of partnerships in the project was also a challenge. Each party involved had specific motivations and requirements. To satisfy all those involved, Lafarge worked to find common goals among parties. The finished product is testament to Lafarge's determination and dedication in meeting this challenge. Lafarge Meadows benefits all stakeholders, while achieving its vision of wildlife habitat creation, enhancement, and protection.
