| Project | TREECYCLE: Making Protecting Nature LOGical |
| Summary Of Activity | "Treecycle" is LOGical Creations Ltd's furniture manufacturing process. The business model is based on the highest level of the pollution prevention hierarchy: elimination at source. The company implemented practices that eliminate pollution at source as they: recycle on site; efficiently use and conserve natural resources; substitute ""clean"" and green materials and feedstock; implement purchasing policies and inventory management to avoid the generation of waste; use product designed to eliminate waste; implement process and equipment modifications; and have ongoing continuous improvement to processes. Logical Creations has a strict policy preventing any recyclable matter from ever entering a landfill; harvests only tree that died naturally in the forest; implements energy conservation initiatives; and continually seeks improvement through green procurement practices. |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success | LOGical Creations Ltd applies stains and lacquers by hand rather than with energy consuming electric/pneumatic applicators. This has resulted in a learning curve in order to master applying without drips and brush marks, which has entailed research into the right combination of pre-catalyzed lacquer, quality brushes and technique. The pre-catalyzed lacquer dries extremely quickly and has reduced energy consumption due to lack of energy consuming drying booths and lamps. The company's conversion to the 40% more energy efficient infrared radiant heating systems has increased purchase cost by 300% compared to forced air heating systems. A great challenge comes in manually and selectively harvesting dead trees rather than purchasing from a forester, which has resulted in a large time commitment. As such, the company implemented an assembly line approach whereby each man has a specific duty while harvesting. For example, one man fells trees and another delimbs and loads for transport. |
