Bike to Work Office Challenge |
| Summary Of Activity
|
Stantec's 2008 Bike to Work Office Challenge provided an opportunity to get its employees engaged in the critical issue of climate change. The main goals of the event were to promote environmental awareness and corporate sustainability, as well as to encourage employees to take individual action and create positive change. The event was very successful with office participation, more than quadrupling from the prior year, with around ten percent of our more than 8 000 employees participating. Together, our employees cycled more than 90 000 kilometres, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 30 tons. The Bike to Work Office Challenge is now a signature annual event, eagerly anticipated by staff from all across the company. |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success
|
Many employees initially faced challenges in cycling to work as Stantec did not provide adequate facilities for cyclists. The Edmonton office now provides amenities for cyclists including showers, change rooms, and secure, covered bicycle parking. The office even installed a bicycle repair centre which includes a tire pump, a bicycle repair stand and a variety of tools for employee use. This makes it easier for employees to choose to commute by bicycle.
During the Bike to Work Challenge, many employees had stereotypes about the type of people who cycle and believed that cycling to work was difficult or inconvenient. Perceptions began to change as we encouraged more and more people to get on their bikes. One of Laura Francheschini's proudest moments was when her Office Leader, who initially told her there was "no way" he would ever cycle to work, eventually felt the need to join in to demonstrate support for the staff and the initiative. |
