| Project | Environmental Coordination Office of Students |
| Summary Of Activity | ECOS, the Environmental Coordination Office of Students, is the Students Union sustainability office. ECOS works to involve students in a multi-lateral approach to campus sustainability. The Environmental Coordination Office of Students: • educates and involves the campus community regarding the ecological, social and economic aspects of sustainability • researches and recommends environmental and social policies to the Students' Union Executive, which strives to make the Students' Union a model of sustainability • provides resources to the campus community which will network and assist community members to be leaders in sustainability |
| Barriers/Challenges To Success | The main barrier that ECOS has faced is the inherent political nature of environmental advocacy. As a service of the Students Union, the office is an apolitical entity, which is a difficult position to mediate as the University of Alberta is a politically charged community. However, ECOS has been able to find a lovely balance between encouraging positive change in students in a non-political fashion. They have also found ways to work with other like minded groups, and have collaborated on many initiatives because everyone involved shares the same vision of a more sustainable future. |
