|
Teck Coal Limited is North America's largest steel-making coal producer and exporter with five open-pit mines located in southeastern British Columbia and Cardinal River Operations (CRO) located in west-central Alberta. This nomination focuses specifically on CRO's commitment to the long-term conservation of grizzly bears and their habitat. CRO follows an approach to grizzly bear conservation based on research, adaptive management and partnerships. Since 1999 CRO, and its predecessor Cardinal River Coals Ltd., provided financial support to the Foothills Research Institute's (formerly Foothills Model Forest) grizzly bear program. Over the past ten years, our efforts have supported this program as well as several PhD and Masters theses. Through research, there is an improved understanding about the regional grizzly bear populations, their movements and habitat use. New knowledge allows CRO to adapt any mining activities to better address the bears' needs.

| Barriers/Challenges To Success
|
The biggest challenge is the lack of regional planning and management to address grizzly bear populations and habitat. As was previously stated we participated in the Regional Carnivore Management Group which was dissolved in 2006. We remain optimistic that recent initiatives by the Government of Alberta such as the Land-use Framework (released in December 2008) and the Alberta Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan 2008 - 2013 (released in March 2008) will facilitate integrated land-use and wildlife planning at a regional level. Cooperation and support from governments, industries, non-government organizations and the public is essential for the long-term conservation of grizzly bears.
