Seeking to determine the most effective role the Alberta Emerald Foundation can play in supporting and encouraging youth involvement in environmental excellence. a series of interviews, surveys and stakeholder meetings were conducted. Thank you very much to those who participated in this process.
The resulting report was released in 2008 and outlines opportunities for engaging Alberta's youth. To view the full report, please Click Here.
The key message from the report was that Alberta needs more youth engagement in environmental action and the Alberta Emerald Foundation is taking steps to support this.
Youth Environmental Engagement Grant Program
In an effort to support and encourage the grassroots examples of environmental excellence that are taking place at schools throughout the province, the Alberta Emerald Foundation has partnered with ConocoPhillips to introduce a granting program that will support the efforts of young people in Alberta.
Schools, classrooms, clubs and youth groups are invited to apply for a micro-grants of $300 to support their environmental engagement activities. These grants are intended to help underwrite the costs associated with providing opportunities to develop an understanding of and interest in the environment through:
- presentations by guest speakers
- field trips to natural areas, interpretation centres, zoos, botanical gardens, museums, universities, etc.
- obtaining supplies for environmentally-related projects
- engaging in an environmental activity such as tree-planting
- establishing a natural area
- other similar events and projects
The Alberta Emerald Foundation hopes to encourage Albera's youth to gain knowledge and understanding about our natural and built environments through such topics as:
- conservation of energy and natural resources
- waste minimization and recycling, reducing environmental impacts
- other similar topics
Grant applications will be reviewed by a panel of volunteers who will determine the recipients. Funds are limited and will be allocated to those projects who best support the goals of the program, as described above.
An additional $100 grant will be paid to the school, classroom or group if they report on the supported activity through a letter, essay, art work, video presentation that can then be posted on the Alberta Emerald Foundation web site.
We hope to allocate 100 Youth Environmental Engagement Grants this year.
