Gifts of Cash
Please complete an AEF Donation Form to ensure our records are correct. Make cheques payable to the Alberta Emerald Foundation. A charitable tax receipt will be issued for the value of the gift.

Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities
Gifts of publicly traded securities provide special tax incentives: no tax is paid on any capital gain a donor may realize as the result of liquidating publicly traded securities (as opposed to 50% if they are sold). In either case a charitable tax receipt is issued to the donor for the value of the shares, reducing taxes even more. Wills & Bequests
You may wish to name the Foundation as a beneficiary in your will. This gift may be a specific sum of money; a percentage of estate assets or the residue; an amount equal to the fair market value of a specific property; or certain personal property or real estate. Sample will clauses are available on request.
Life Insurance
Gifts of life insurance allow donors to make a relatively small commitment now that will translate to a significant gift in the future.
- If you transfer ownership of an existing policy or purchase a new policy with the Foundation as the owner, you will receive a charitable receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy and any premiums you pay after the Foundation becomes the owner. Upon death, all proceeds will pass directly to the Foundation for the benefit of the Alberta Emerald Foundation.
- You may wish to name the Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. In this case no charitable tax receipt is issued until your death, at which time your estate will receive a receipt for the value of the death benefits.
Residual Interest Gifts and Charitable Remainder Trusts
Some gifts can be arranged to provide a lifetime of income or use for the donor and, after the donor no longer has use for the gift, a future for the Alberta Emerald Foundation. These gifts are irrevocable and may provide immediate tax benefits. We are happy to share more about these types of gifts if they fit your situation.
Professional Advice
The Alberta Emerald Foundation welcomes the opportunity to speak with donors about possible gifts to the Foundation. We also encourage all donors to seek the advice of professional advisors before making a major charitable gift. Accountants, lawyers, financial and insurance advisors will help ensure the gift you make provides the best tax advantages possible for you and your family.
The Calgary Foundation and the Edmonton Community Foundation
The Alberta Emerald Foundation Endowments have been established at the community foundations in Edmonton and Calgary. We encourage anyone thinking of making a gift to support endowment to contact these community foundations. They each have a high level of knowledge and expertise in the areas of estate planning and charitable giving, and may be able to help you and your advisors make the best possible decisions.
